Saudi Arabia, UAE and Qatar urge Lebanon exodus

 

Three Arab states have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon amid signs that the conflict in Syria is spilling over into its western neighbour.
 Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar urged immediate action after a string of kidnappings of Sunni Muslims by a powerful Shia clan.

 They were retaliating for the abduction of a clan member by rebels in Damascus.
 The rebels say the man was fighting for the Syrian government on behalf of Lebanon's Shia Hezbollah movement.
That claim has been denied by his family, the al-Meqdad clan.
 Lebanese citizens were further caught up in the Syrian crisis on Wednesday when warplanes struck the town of Azaz north of Aleppo, reportedly killing 30 people.
 Among those reported wounded in the attack close to Syria's border with Turkey were seven Lebanese hostages held by the rebels since May. Four more hostages were said to be missing after the building they were in was hit.
After unconfirmed TV reports that the four had died, rioters were said to have burned tyres on the main road to Beirut airport and an Air France flight switched routes to Jordan "for security reasons".
 Clan warning

 The al-Meqdad clan said it had abducted more than 20 people it claimed were connected to Syrian rebels. A video broadcast by a pro-Syrian TV channel showed what it said were two of the men, apparently including a Free Syrian Army captain.

 Although most of the men abducted were Syrians, a Turkish businessman and a Saudi national were also reported to be among those seized.

 Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey are all Sunni Muslim countries that support the Syrian rebels fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad. 

 As the al-Meqdads threatened to carry out further abductions, the official Saudi news agency Spa quoted a foreign ministry official as saying Saudi citizens should avoid "travelling to Lebanon for their own safety".

A UAE foreign ministry official said it issued its alert after the embassy "received information about UAE nationals being targeted and because of the difficult and sensitive circumstances in Lebanon", state news agency Wam reported.

Lebanon is a popular tourist destination for Saudis and citizens of other Gulf states.

Japan arrests pro-China activist swimmers in island row

 

Japanese police have arrested 14 pro-China activists who landed on disputed islands, reports say.

The group had sailed from Hong Kong to the islands, known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, followed by Japanese coastguard vessels.
China called for the activists' immediate and unconditional release.
Japan is also embroiled in a dispute with South Korea about another island group, as well as a high-level visit to the controversial Yasukuni shrine.
The various rows erupted as Japan marked the anniversary of its surrender at the end of World War II and South Korea its independence from Japanese colonial rule.

The group of pro-China activists set sail on Sunday.

Japanese coastguard vessels surrounded the boat as it approached, but seven of the activists jumped overboard and swam to one of the islands, local media report.

Officials told the BBC that two activists returned to the boat, while the other five were arrested on land.

Later, the coastguard said the two activists who returned and seven more who had remained on the boat had been arrested for "alleged illegal entry".

It is the first time non-Japanese nationals have landed on the disputed islands since 2004.
A spokesman for the group said they wanted the world to know "that this is - way back in history - the territory of China".
"The Japanese have no right to stop us," David Ko told the Associated Press from Hong Kong.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said Japan had lodged a diplomatic protest with China and in Hong Kong over the activists.
